What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are an excellent choice for replacing one or more missing teeth. A dental implant is a tooth root replacement made from titanium alloy that is implanted into the jawbone. After the healing period, the implant attaches into your bone, making the implant look and feel very similar to natural teeth.

Dental implants work very well in a variety of situations, including:

  • Restoring a single-tooth space
  • Replacing multiple missing teeth
  • Securing a denture to improve chewing and speaking

What Should You Expect at Your Implant Appointment?

Implant surgery is typically performed in the dental chair using local anesthesia to numb the area. A single implant procedure commonly takes about an hour. Multiple implants can often be placed in a single longer appointment. Occasionally bone grafting is needed during or prior to implant surgery in order to build up the jawbone to sufficiently support an implant.

Healing and integration of the implant(s) with the jawbone occurs over two to three months in a process called osseointegration. After the appropriate healing and integration time, your dentist will use the implant(s) to anchor a permanent crown or a bridge to provide “teeth” that will function just like your natural teeth. If you had implants placed to secure a denture, attachments will be added to the implants after the necessary healing time and your denture will be adjusted to snap into the implants.
